LA CARMINA 2.0: HARDER, BETTER, GOTH-ER, LOLITA-ER: NEW CAMERA, PROJECTS!

Asian goth girl La Carmina with cutest pet cat, Scottish Fold kitten breed.
La Carmina - both the blog and the Goth chick - have come a long way since stuttering onto the web last September. Posting has increased to near daily, page views and media mentions have risen... and we're not about to take two Valium and curl up for a nap. No siree-bob. The syringe is loaded with amphetamines, and the site is getting a shot in the arm.

First: the photos are about to triple in quality. I am now the lucky owner of a Sony DSLR-a700 professional digital camera with Minolta auto-focus lenses. Expect more original photography and how-to style shoots... starting tomorrow!

Second: I'll introduce more website features and interaction. Thanks for the fantastic response to my goofy Cooking Cute video. If you have suggestions for the blog, do let me know.

Finally: I have several exciting projects in fruition... stay tuned and I'll announce them shortly. Hint: 'tis to do with fashion and writing, and possibly travel.

Until then, please add me on my social networking sites:
YouTube (lacarmina) † Twitter (lacarmina) † Facebook groupMySpace (la_carmina)
and subscribe to my mailing list and RSS feeds if you haven't already.

DOMO ARIGATO for all your comments and support - it means the world to me! Now please excuse me as I grind my jaw and para-para until dawn...

NY COMIC-CON 2008: LA CARMINA CRASHES THE TOKYOPOP LOLITA FASHION SHOW.

La Carmina Gothic Lolita at Tokyopop booth, New York Comic Con 2008. So I was at the NY Comic-Con Lolita fashion show, gazing placidly at the mincing pink doilies, when suddenly this Gothic freak LEAPS onstage (in purple-black lipstick and spiky boots and a Victorian mourning gown) and starts STORMING away like a beast in heat. Everyone wakes up and grabs a camera - ohhh yes! Now THIS is style with a major attitude. But wait, but is it part of the show? Apparently not, because Security GRABS her by the elbow and drags her offstage. Mischief written all over her face, she slips away and prances across the front row, followed by a swarm of teenagers in superhero costumes who gush: "OMG that was SO awesome! You're our hero! Can I have a hug? Me too? An autograph, and can we take a picture together?"

All right. I'm not going to pull an OJ Simpson on you. I did it, and if you ask 99% of the audience, it was the highlight of the show. The rest want my scalp. But just wait until you see the VIDEO - yes, my friend Dakota recorded the whole thing - and I bet you'll end up laughing too.
Lolita costume at NY Comiccon 2008 at Javits Convention Center. I went to the NYC Comic-Con with Dakota Lane (author of upcoming novel Gothic Lolita) and Kyshah Hell, who interviewed me for the Morbid Outlook article on Lolita fashion. The Javits Center was jammed and there were mind-blowing(ly geeky) costumes at every turn.
Tokyopop Lolita fashion show crashed by La Carmina. I enjoyed meeting several MySpace buddies.
Manga and cosplay fans at New York Comic-Con April 2008.
Posing for pictures after the runway scandal. I swear, it was 100% impromptu. I arrived late, the drab stage lured me in, and there you have it.
WeRobot T-shirt by The Chop, Ugly Doll bat, Marui One stickers, Tokyopop comic books and manga. I had a press pass, so I talked my way into two giant bags of free goods. Basil Farrow looks over an Uglydoll, a WeRobot T-shirt by The Chop, and MaruiOne pamphlets and stickers.
Jeffrey Scott 1019 surrealist photos, Grimm Fairy Tales comic, creepy dolls by Christy Kane, Marvel comics Dracula by Bram Stoker. Don't we all love rolling around in swag? I'm not a comic book reader, but a few items caught my eye: Christy Kane's eerie tales of doll sisters, a twisted Alice in Wonderland comic by Grimm Fairy Tales, Marvel's graphic novel of Stoker's Dracula, the surrealist manipulated photos of Jeffrey Scott (1019).

Gloomy Bear toy and VooDoo Babies: Voodoo Me, Wizard Jr, Dracula, Freddy, Hell Kitty.
I picked up a bloody Gloomy Bear and the Goth-est VooDoo Babies: Voodoo Me, Wizard Jr, Dracula, Freddy, Hell Kitty.

We're not quite done with the Comic-Con. Next up: reviews of Marui One... and photos/videos of the Lolita runway show infamy.

LA CARMINA GOTHIC LOLITA ON FACEBOOK.

Gothic Lolita La Carmina modeling clothing. Asian goth girl fashion.
Recently, I've been peer-pressured into exploring Facebook. I created a La Carmina group for my work and general Gothic Lolita info sharing. Right now, I only have my fashion co-critic and a few others on board. Help me flesh it out by joining the group! (You'll have to be a Facebook member in order to access the page.)

I also have a La Carmina "writer" page on Facebook - please join this too. In case you didn't know, Parallax Press published my first book last year ("The Cosmos in a Carrot"). My second book is in the works. More info TBA... but I have a feeling you'll really like what it's about!

PS: I won't be using Facebook for its actual purpose (social networking), so I won't be accepting friend requests. Add me on MySpace instead if you haven't already!

Blouse: Westmend, a Chinese Lolita brand.
Skirt: actually a petticoat by Spider, a Hong Kong Gothic Lolita label.
Ruffled knee socks: Spider.
Shoes: found them in my mom's closet.

CHRISTMAS LOLITA (MERRY XMAS FROM LA CARMINA).

Christmas Lolita dress from Baby the Stars Shine Bright, a Japanese Lolita clothing brand
Happy Halloween (or whatever it is you celebrate) from La Carmina!

The holidays are the perfect excuse to take a break from the Gothic Lolita monochrome. For a Christmas Lolita look, try dressing up in red and white - like these girls in the Baby, the Stars Shine Bright graphic above.

What's on everyone's Lolita wish-lists? Did Santa give you what you wanted for Xmas?

WELCOME.

LaCarmina.com is a tribute to Gothic Lolita fashion, my style obsession du jour. I’ve always had a (perhaps unfortunate) penchant towards subculture-inspired clothing. My most outrageous outfits, however, pale next the youth street style I encounter on my trips to Asia. It was on one of these teen vacations that I noticed a new breed of freak. Japanese girls in foofy skirts and cravattes; think Queen Victoria meets Alice in Wonderland meets Marilyn Manson. It was a fashion with no parallel in North America. Later, I found out its name: Gothic Lolita.

I love to experiment with unconventional looks, but for those living outside Japan, Gothic Lolita isn’t exactly prêt-a-porter. Halloween and anime conventions aside, the style can come across as cringe-worthy. (Exhibit A: Lolita Snap.) And so, much of what I wear does not fall under typical Japanese Goth Loli categories. This site documents my personal interpretation of the aesthetic, which I find intriguing and inspiring. I will post photos, videos, and musings with an emphasis on Gothic Lolita style and design. Look around, befriend me on MySpace + Buzznet, and check back often – I’ll be updating frequently.
